Definition Al-tmyyz

Al-tmyyz according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

That which removes the established ambiguity of a mentioned entity, such as: two manns of clarified butter, or of an implied entity, such as: may Allah bless him as a horseman! For horseman is a tamyiz in relation to the pronoun in his praise, and it does not refer back to a specific predecessor.

Al-tmyyz according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

That which removes the established ambiguity of a mentioned or implied entity.

Al-tmyyz according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

The distinction between similar things, among which ﴿That Allah may distinguish the wicked from the good﴾ (Al-Anfal 37). Tamyiz is also applied to the faculty in the brain by which meanings are deduced, whence the saying: so-and-so has no discernment, mentioned by Al-Raghib (Al-Mufradat p. 478).
