Dar al-kfr according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

According to the Shafi'is and the Hanbalis: it is of two kinds: first, the country that belonged to the Muslims and over which the disbelievers prevailed; second, the country that never belonged to the Muslims. Al-kaffara (expiation): what the sinner seeks forgiveness by, such as alms, fasting and the like; the Shari'a has determined kinds of expiations, among them the expiation of the oath, the expiation of the fast and the expiation for omitting some rites of the pilgrimage.
