Definition Ḍman al-aʾma

Ḍman al-aʾma according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

As for the responsibility of the imams: the people were commanded to be led by the imams in prayer and to follow them without preceding them. If the imam completes what he has warranted in leading them, it becomes easy for the followers to complete their prayer as commanded. If the imam hurries and prevents the followers from completing the bowing, the prostration and the like, he has not fulfilled what he warranted to them. It is therefore upon the imams to seek the completeness of what they have warranted, with ease and deliberation, and not to hasten the people so as to prevent them from completing what is incumbent upon them. (Az-zahir fi ghara'ib alfaz al-imam ash-Shafi'i, p. 57).
