Definition Ḥuruwf al-jar

Ḥuruwf al-jar according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

That which was established to convey the meaning of the verb or its equivalent to a noun by entering upon that noun, whether it is an explicit noun such as I passed by Zayd and I am passing by Zayd, or it is in the interpretation of a noun as in His exalted saying: {And the earth was narrow for them despite its vastness, meaning despite its breadth}.

Ḥuruwf al-jar according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

That which was established to convey a verb, or its equivalent, or its meaning, to what follows it.

Ḥuruwf al-jar according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

That which was established to convey the verb or its meaning to what follows it, such as I passed by Zayd.
