📖 2 min readThe contrary of avowal. The hamza is sometimes used for reproving negation, meaning what follows ought not have happened and its doer blameworthy, as: worship you what you carve? It also comes for invalidating negation: what follows happens not, its claimer a liar, as: did your Lord choose you sons? For it to signify negating what follows, what is negated being negated must stand affirmed, for negation’s negation is affirmation; hence His word: « is not Allah the wisest of judges? » and « is not Allah enough for His servant? »
Lexically: verbal noun of ankara; it comes in the tongue for three senses: first, ignorance of person, thing or matter: you say « I knew not Zayd », « I knew not the report »; when you know him not, Allah said: « Youssouf’s brothers came and entered upon him: he knew them, they knew him not ».
The contrary of acknowledgment; its origin is what inconceivable reaching the heart, a kind of ignorance; man may deny a thing with its image formed in the heart, being then a liar.
