Al-Hasan al-Maybudhi said in al-Fawatih: 'Asad Allah al-Ghalib, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, may the peace of Allah be upon him and upon whoever draws near to him', end of quote. If it is asked: how can one say 'peace be upon him', when al-Nawawi said in al-Rawda that the sound and more famous view is that salat upon other than the prophets, used alone, is disliked as a dislike of sanctification; and he reported from Shaykh Abu Muhammad that the salam is like the salat, so it is not used alone for an absent one other than the prophets. I say: al-Rafi'i adduced in al-Saghir that the stronger of the two views regarding the salat is the absence of dislike, though it is the abandoning of the more excellent.
