Ṭal-b al-ʿlm according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

At-talib: the active participle of at-talab; at-talab in language: the attempt to find a thing and take it. Al-'ilm in language: the opposite of ignorance, knowledge, certainty. By convention: it is the knowledge of the thing as it is. The author of the Ta'rifat said: it is the firm conviction conforming to reality. The philosophers said: it is the occurrence of the image of the thing in the intellect. (Al-mawsu'a al-fiqhiyya 28/334).
