📖 14 min readAnd when He, glorified and exalted, prohibited marriage to one who is characterized by fornication, whether a man or a woman, and began - because a woman's marriage to a fornicator is a presumption of her own fornication - by warning against females, in a way that suggests the permissibility of accusing them of fornication simply because they are married to someone known to be a fornicator, and this is after He began with the punishment for fornication of the female, because her fornication is a greater evil and a more significant scandal and corruption. Then, as a complement to this, He prohibited slander, which necessitates a great desire to cover up and protect reputations and conceal vices, saying, mentioning the collective, because the ruling of establishing the punishment is upon
An explanation of the lie of the slanderers, as He said, rebuking those who fabricated and spread it, and warning those who thought well of them: {لولا} meaning, would that they had not, and why not {جاءوا} - those who fabricated it - with {عليه} - if they were truthful - {بأربعة شهداء} as previously mentioned that slander is not permissible except with these. And since they failed to bring the witnesses, their lie was exposed, so He said: {فإذ} - so when {لم يأتوا بالشهداء} - the described witnesses - {فأولئك} - those who are far from the truth {عند الله} - in the judgment of the Supreme King, and in this specific instance, in His knowledge - {هم الكاذبون} - the great liars, both outwardly and inwardly. Having clarified for them, by establishing evidence of the lie of those who indulged in this speech, that they deserved blame, and this was a warning to the pious, He explained that they deserved, due to their failure to deny, general punishment, in a context that promises forgiveness. So, He said, sympathizing with {ولولا} - the previous: {ولولا فضل الله} - the encompassing perfection {عليكم} - upon you {ورحمته} - and His mercy, His treatment of you with increased kindness, looking at the favor and honor, necessary for mercy {في الدنيا} - in this world, by accepting repentance and treating with clemency {والآخرة} - and in the Hereafter, by forgiving those He wishes to forgive among you {لمسكم} - you would have been touched {في ما أفضتم} - by rushing into {فيه} - some of you in reality, and some of you figuratively, by not denying {عذاب عظيم} - a great punishment.
Among those who have believed, even if they were at the lowest degrees of faith, how much more so for those who have attained its highest peak and achieved its ultimate goal. For them, there is a painful punishment as a deterrent to prevent them from intending to spread the like of that, due to the great harm it contains, in this world through punishment and other means by which God exacts revenge from them, and in the Hereafter. For God knows whether the punishment has been averted from all who commit it or not. And God, who possesses the attributes of majesty and beauty, has complete knowledge of the measures of things, both apparent and hidden, and the wisdom behind concealing or revealing them, or other matters among all affairs. And you do not know, meaning you do not have knowledge from yourselves, so know what God has taught you and do not exceed it, lest you go astray.
And when He concluded with the judgment upon them due to their ignorance, and the decree was as will be indicated by what comes next regarding the connection to what is not connected: Were it not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy towards you, the destruction of those who love such a thing would have been hastened, with the punishment of this world being followed by the punishment of the Hereafter. He repeated the reminder of the blessing, by abandoning the response, indicating the strength of the exaggeration and the severity of the warning through repetition and omission: {Were it not for the favor of Allah} - that is, the One who possesses all majesty and honor {upon you and His mercy towards you}, and {were it not that Allah} - the One whose power is complete, whose mercy precedes His wrath {is kind towards you}, in establishing what removes your ignorance with what preserves
And since the seal is characterized by these two descriptions after the command to forgive, perhaps it emboldens one to commit such an offense, and warns against falling into something similar, as stated in the verse: {Indeed, those who accuse} namely, of fornication {the chaste women} i.e., those who have been protected
The narrative: As for the hadith of Ali, may God be pleased with him, it was reported by at-Tabarani in al-Awsat in the biography of Muhammad ibn al-Fadl as-Sukti, and by Abu Abdullah ibn Manda in the book ar-Ruh, from Salim ibn Abdullah ibn Umar, from his father, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, said to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him: 'O Abu al-Hasan, sometimes you are present and we are absent, and sometimes we are present and you are absent. I ask you about three things, do you have knowledge about them?' Ali said: 'What are they?' Umar said: 'A man loves a man without having seen any good from him, and a man hates a man without having seen any evil from him.' Ali, may God be pleased with him, said: 'Yes, I heard the Messenger of God, may God's peace and blessings be upon him, say: {the souls are like recruited armies, what is familiar to them will come together, and what is unfamiliar will differ}. Umar said: 'That is one.' He continued: 'And what about a man who is narrating a hadith, then forgets it, but then remembers it?' Ali, may God be pleased with him, said: 'I heard the Messenger of God, may God's peace and blessings be upon him, say: Every heart has a cloud like the cloud that covers the moon, sometimes the moon is shining, then a cloud covers it and it becomes dark, and sometimes it clears up and shines again. Similarly, the heart is narrating something, then a cloud covers it and it forgets, but when the cloud clears, it remembers.'
This is understood from the concept of purification. And since the situation is difficult due to the inclination of souls towards vile matters and their pursuit of desires, He justified this command by encouraging and warning, saying: {إن الله} - He who is all-aware due to His complete encompassment - {خبير}. And since the instinct of modesty, despite this, is a great deterrent and one does not disobey except through habituation and practice, He illustrated this through craftsmanship, saying: {بما يصنعون*} - even if they strive to conceal it and meticulously plan their deceit. Having begun with the men, He then addressed the women, saying: {وقل للمؤمنات}, also encouraging them with the mention of this noble description {يغضضن} - to lower their gaze. And since the intention is to lower the gaze from certain visible things, which are the forbidden ones, He said: {من أبصارهن} - so they do not follow their gaze to something forbidden, whether it be a man or something else. This answers the hadith of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, regarding looking at the play of the Ethiopians in the mosque, by suggesting that she was likely prepubescent because she said: 'Judge me according to the young girl who is eager to play.' {ويحفظن فروجهن} - to protect their private parts from what is not permissible for them to expose or otherwise. And since women are the snares of Satan, they were commanded to increase their modesty by saying:
He said, concerning this, '{And whoever is averse to them}' without saying 'even if they are averse', and He used the present tense to inform that He accepts the repentance of those who disobey after the revelation of the verse. He used the proper noun in His saying '{Verily, Allah}' to inform that the Exalted One is not despondent of mercy. Perhaps He also used the word 'after' to indicate forgiveness for the inclination towards that action when it occurs, for the soul cannot help but hate it at that time. So, He said, '{After they have been compelled, He is Forgiving}' - that is, to them and to their guardians - covering that sin if they repent, '{Merciful}' in guiding both categories to what pleases Him.
With it, for the understanding, so that they may be guided. {والله} means the One who possesses all the attributes of perfection. {بكل شيء} means with all things, and with things other than them, {عليم} makes clear each thing in a way that facilitates its path. So trust in what He says, even if you do not understand it yourselves, and ponder it carefully, for He will reveal to you what has been closed off from it, glorified be He.
They are an example of the bodies that Allah has purified from impurities and created to be upright. The oil is an example of the beautiful secrets that He has placed within them. It has been reported in some traditions that the mosques for the people of the heavens are like the stars for the people of the earth. In Mu'jam at-Tabarani al-Awsat, it is narrated from Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Like a niche,' referring to the heart of Muhammad, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, with the glass being his heart, the lamp being the light within his heart, and the tree being Ibrahim, peace be upon him, {neither of the east nor of the west}. This means neither Jewish nor Christian. When Allah, the Exalted, mentioned the actions of these men who came to Him and turned away from everything else, He explained their ultimate goal, saying: {so that Allah may reward them}, meaning they do this so that Allah may reward them {with the best of what they did}. This is the reward that He gives them, and He forgives their evil deeds {and increase them from His bounty} beyond what they deserve, as is the custom of the generous. Since the decree is that Allah, due to His glory, greatness, and perfection, does not accept that the reward for the doer of good be limited to only what they deserve, He explains this out of mercy, saying: {And Allah} - meaning
And since knowledge is described as the cause of something like a written book and the like, and a name of the doer is derived from what it possesses, just as it is said: 'a night that is standing' and 'a day that is fasting', {and you will always find them betraying until they come to you} [{Al-Ma'idah: 13}]. And the lines of power were evident on every existing thing, strongly clear on the pages of everything, so the creatures were indicative of their creator and all the attributes of perfection that belong to Him. It is correct to attribute knowledge to them and to ascribe it to them, so He said: {every} creature {has known} what is the cause of it from the knowledge of what is in it from the signs that indicate and teach about what exists from the attributes of perfection {its prayer} i.e., the aspect by which it is connected to its Lord and attributed to Him {and its glorification} i.e., the state by which it is cleared of its creator from evil and exalted above imperfection. And the tongues of their states have explicitly stated this, on behalf of the explanation of their speech. This one, by its standing still and being silent, and this one, by its growth and movement, and this one, by its movement with will and intention, and seeking the benefits, and its distance from the states of its harm, by its mere nature and what is instilled in its nature. And this one, by its speech and intellect, and its intelligence and virtue. Although the relation of each of them to the earth and the sky is one, and what Imam Ahmad narrated in the Musnad from Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with them, about the Prophet, peace be upon him, indicates this clearly.
This surah and what precedes it, with all the grandeur we have, are {ayat} - that is, judgments, decrees, proofs, and parables - {mubayyinat}, with no obscurity in any of them for any of creation, for Allah has intended to guide you, some of you through exposition and others through the creation of submission. And Allah, the Great King, {guides whom He wills} - all of the worshipers - {to the straight path}, through the power of revealing ayat and the act of creating faith and submission, so they believe with unwavering faith. And since concealing these ayat from some after they have been made clear is more astonishing than initially setting them up, the context clearly indicates that the judgment is: And Allah misguides whom He wills, so they disbelieve in the ayat and the Wise Reminder. The transition from the light to darkness after being enveloped in it is even more astonishing. Elaborating on what I have mentioned, which the context clearly indicates, is a hidden, perfect proof, marveling at those who are blind to the proofs of tawhid that He has established, enumerated, and clarified to the point where they have become, as He mentioned, greater than the light of the sun. {And they say} - those for whom the light of Allah has appeared, but only with their tongues: {We believe in Allah}, whose majesty, greatness, and perfection have been made clear to us, {and in the Messenger}, who has taught us the perfection and universality of his message through the proofs he has established. {And we obey}, that is, we bring about obedience to Allah and the Messenger, and the great contradiction between deed and word is emphasized by the phrase of separation, so He says: {Then a party among them}
He follows the general obedience, then says: {And whoever obeys Allah}, meaning the One who has absolute authority, {and His Messenger} in accepting the decree and other matters, in all apparent actions, whether they are pleasing or displeasing. {And fears Allah}, meaning the One who possesses majesty and honor, with his heart, due to past sins, to carry him to all good, just as the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, would do: when one of them committed a shortcoming, he would come to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and say: 'Purify me.' And one of them would be taught to return, but would not return. In his purification, he would come to himself, and this occurred to their men and women - may Allah be pleased with all of them. Sometimes, we follow their methodology and are gathered in their group. {And fears Him}, meaning Allah, in what is to come, by making a barrier between himself and what angers Him, from the permissible matters, and leaving them out of caution. Since the pronouns are singular, it indicates the scarcity of the obedient. He used the plural to avoid the assumption that it refers to only one person, so He said: {So those} of high rank {are the ones who will prosper} with eternal dominion, and there is no prosperity for anyone else. When Allah mentioned what is arranged for apparent obedience, which is an indication of inner submission, He mentioned the state of the hypocrites regarding it, saying, with a sense of sorrow: {And they say} because what is intended is mere speech, without the intention of restricting it to a specific time. {And they swear} by Allah, as if He emphasized the past tense to indicate that they did not do it more than once, due to what it implies of increased submissiveness and humility. {By Allah}, meaning the King who possesses absolute perfection.
And the dominion of my Ummah will reach what has been gathered for me from it." This is known to those who have studied the conquests of the lands, and it is comprehensively and excellently collected in the second half of the biography by Al-Hafiz Abu Ar-Rabi' bin Salim Al-Kalai, and also in the book of his teacher Ibn Habib. I do not know of anything more beneficial for strengthening faith, after memorizing the Quran, than studying the biographies and conquests. Al-Kalai's biography combines both, and I have organized the biography into a poem, which begins with: "What is wrong with your eyelids, overflowing with tears... and the ocean of your thoughts, overflowing with worries." When they killed Uthman, may God be pleased with him, and revolted against Ali and then his son Al-Hasan, may God be pleased with them, God removed that security, as indicated by the particle "min" and the indefinite "a security." Fear came and continued to grow and increase gradually until it became a great affair in our time - and God is the one to be relied upon. Since the estimation is: so whoever is steadfast on the religion of Islam, and submits to its rulings and is upright, he will attain this good news, He then connected it with: {And whoever disbelieves}, meaning by turning away from the rulings or otherwise; or it is connected to {worship Me}.
Those who have ceased to bear children and those who have not yet menstruated, due to their age or the absence of a spouse. And when the latter is mentioned, it is said: {those who do not expect to marry}, either because they have no desire for it or because they have reached an age where they are no longer desirable. {There is no blame upon them} for anything that may cause them hardship, {that they may put down their outer garments}, that is, the visible outer garments that cover their modest clothing, as indicated by Ibn Mas'ud's recitation, {from their outer garments}. Abu Salih said: They put down the jilbab, which is what covers their clothes from above, like a cloak, and they stand before men in their shield and headscarf {not displaying their adornment}, meaning intentionally - by placing what is permitted for them to place, revealing their faces with adornment, or not displaying their adornment. The author of Al-'Ubab and Al-Muhkam said: A woman displays her adornment: she reveals her face. And in the dictionary, it is said: A woman displays her adornment: she reveals her beauty to men. The root of the word 'baraj' revolves around appearance, as mentioned earlier in Al-Hijr; and Al-Baydawi said: The origin of 'baraj' is to deliberately reveal what is hidden. It seems that the form of 'taf'al' is used to indicate that what appears from her face or adornment is unintentional and not intended for corruption, and there is no blame in it. And when the permissible is mentioned, and revealing the face is an invitation to doubt, it is referred to.
And when, at the beginning of Islam, due to the prevailing hardship, he encouraged them to show hospitality and gather with guests, thinking it was obligatory, given their natural generosity and inclination to gather and show kindness to those in need, He alleviated their burden by saying: {or in separate groups}, meaning dispersed, not with the intention of despising, rejecting, or causing harm. Although eating in a group is better and more blessed, as understood from the context, for Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah narrated from Wahshi bin Harb, from his father, from his grandfather, that a man said to the Prophet, peace be upon him: 'We eat but do not feel full.' He said: 'Perhaps you are eating separately? Gather together over your food and mention Allah's name, and He will bless it for you.' And Ibn Majah narrated from Omar, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, that he said: 'Eat together and do not eat separately, for the blessing is with the group.' And when He mentioned the place of eating and its manner, He mentioned the state of those entering those places or others, so He said, explaining the reason for the permission, using the tool of affirmation, giving glad tidings that they will obey after they were previously hesitant when the Almighty revealed {Do not consume your wealth among yourselves unjustly} {An-Nisa: 29}. So He said: {And when you enter} - that is, because of that or something else - {houses}, that is, with permission, any houses, whether owned or not, mosques or otherwise, {then greet} after entering {yourselves}.
The clear signs, and He is the light of the earth and the heavens, for He has returned the seal to the principle, and the latter is connected to the former - and Allah is the Guide.

[This is] a surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember.
The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that has been made unlawful to the believers.
And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,
Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves - then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful.
And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allah be upon him if he should be among the liars.
But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the liars.
And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful.
And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Accepting of repentance and Wise.
Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment.
Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"?
Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars.
And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment
When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.
And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah]; this is a great slander"?
Allah warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers.
And Allah makes clear to you the verses, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.
And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Kind and Merciful.
O you who have believed, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan - indeed, he enjoins immorality and wrongdoing. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have been pure, ever, but Allah purifies whom He wills, and Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Indeed, those who [falsely] accuse chaste, unaware and believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter; and they will have a great punishment
On a Day when their tongues, their hands and their feet will bear witness against them as to what they used to do.
That Day, Allah will pay them in full their deserved recompense, and they will know that it is Allah who is the perfect in justice.
Evil words are for evil men, and evil men are [subjected] to evil words. And good words are for good men, and good men are [an object] of good words. Those [good people] are declared innocent of what the slanderers say. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.
O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants. That is best for you; perhaps you will be reminded.
And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.
There is no blame upon you for entering houses not inhabited in which there is convenience for you. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allah enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess - then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, Allah is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful.
And We have certainly sent down to you distinct verses and examples from those who passed on before you and an admonition for those who fear Allah.
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.
[Such niches are] in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings
[Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of zakah. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn about -
That Allah may reward them [according to] the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. And Allah gives provision to whom He wills without account.
But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allah before Him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account.
Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light.
Do you not see that Allah is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and Allah is Knowing of what they do.
And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Allah is the destination.
Do you not see that Allah drives clouds? Then He brings them together, then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. And He sends down from the sky, mountains [of clouds] within which is hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightening almost takes away the eyesight.
Allah alternates the night and the day. Indeed in that is a lesson for those who have vision.
Allah has created every [living] creature from water. And of them are those that move on their bellies, and of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
We have certainly sent down distinct verses. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.
But the hypocrites say, "We have believed in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obey"; then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not believers.
And when they are called to [the words of] Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, at once a party of them turns aside [in refusal].
But if the right is theirs, they come to him in prompt obedience.
Is there disease in their hearts? Or have they doubted? Or do they fear that Allah will be unjust to them, or His Messenger? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers.
The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, "We hear and we obey." And those are the successful.
And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger and fears Allah and is conscious of Him - it is those who are the attainers.
And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths that if you ordered them, they would go forth [in Allah 's cause]. Say, "Do not swear. [Such] obedience is known. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with that which you do."
Say, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided. And there is not upon the Messenger except the [responsibility for] clear notification."
Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that - then those are the defiantly disobedient.
And establish prayer and give zakah and obey the Messenger - that you may receive mercy.
Never think that the disbelievers are causing failure [to Allah] upon the earth. Their refuge will be the Fire - and how wretched the destination.
O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And when the children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission [at all times] as those before them have done. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage - there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
There is not upon the blind [any] constraint nor upon the lame constraint nor upon the ill constraint nor upon yourselves when you eat from your [own] houses or the houses of your fathers or the houses of your mothers or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your sisters or the houses of your father's brothers or the houses of your father's sisters or the houses of your mother's brothers or the houses of your mother's sisters or [from houses] whose keys you possess or [from the house] of your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand.
The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and, when they are [meeting] with him for a matter of common interest, do not depart until they have asked his permission. Indeed, those who ask your permission, [O Muhammad] - those are the ones who believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission for something of their affairs, then give permission to whom you will among them and ask forgiveness for them of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Do not make [your] calling of the Messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another. Already Allah knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others. So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet's order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.
Unquestionably, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Already He knows that upon which you [stand] and [knows] the Day when they will be returned to Him and He will inform them of what they have done. And Allah is Knowing of all things.
