📖 2 min readAnd since the one proceeding towards the shade is what they seek refuge in, they thought that. He removed this misconception from them in a way of mocking them to increase the rebuke, so He said, describing {ذي}: {لا ظليل}, meaning no shade from the heat from any aspect. And since what was negated from it was the abundance of shade, which the form of exaggeration implies, it may contain some benefit, as He said: {ولا يغني}, meaning anything from the enrichment {من اللهب}, meaning this type.
And when it became clear that this shade was in the punishment, and it was known that there would be no smoke without fire, He said, explaining that even if there was shade, it would be of no benefit: {إنها} - that is, the fire to which the context refers - {ترمي} - that is, due to its intense heat - {بشرر}, which is what flies out of the fire when it blazes, with the singular form being 'شرارة' (spark), and these are the lightning bolts of that abode. It is said that each spark is like a {القصر} - a large and imposing structure, with one interpretation being that it refers to the thickest part of a tree. The word 'قصر' is a collective noun that encompasses both large and small quantities, and its singular and plural forms are the same. Similarly, any word that forms its plural with the letter 'ت' but is not a complete plural, and whose weight and pattern are known, and which does not have a verb form and is not a genus, does not encompass smaller quantities. The enormity of its sparks is a testament to the enormity of its embers.
That is, when the judgment comes to those who deny, either by what has been mentioned in this surah, or by part of it, or by something else that the messengers have brought. This phrase has been repeated to match the number of parts of the oath or the parts of the answer, so that each phrase becomes a threat against denying one of those parts. This tenth phrase is a confirmation of the previous nine, a completion of their count and meaning, and an indication that the woe to them is perpetual and never-ending, just as the One (God) is perpetual and never-ending. Since it has been made clear that they will have perpetual woe, it is mentioned that the reason for this is their lack of faith in the Quran, and that whoever does not believe in the Quran will never believe in anything. So, He says, explaining the meaning of the statement: {By what statement} - that is, what narrative or revelation that is renewed in its descent upon the one it is sent to, at every time a need arises for it - {after this} - that is, after this Quran, which is a witness to itself, testifying to its own authenticity as a revelation from God, the Exalted, due to its eloquence in its composition, its arrangement of phrases, and its reporting of the unseen, its call to lofty matters, its notification of judgment, and other aspects of knowledge and artistic expression. Therefore, God, considering all this, is the Witness that it is His speech. {Will they believe} - that is, they will renew their faith because of it, in all that it brings.

وَٱلْمُرْسَلَـٰتِ عُرْفًۭا ﴿١﴾
By those [winds] sent forth in gusts
فَٱلْعَـٰصِفَـٰتِ عَصْفًۭا ﴿٢﴾
And the winds that blow violently
وَٱلنَّـٰشِرَٰتِ نَشْرًۭا ﴿٣﴾
And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]
فَٱلْفَـٰرِقَـٰتِ فَرْقًۭا ﴿٤﴾
And those [angels] who bring criterion
فَٱلْمُلْقِيَـٰتِ ذِكْرًا ﴿٥﴾
And those [angels] who deliver a message
عُذْرًا أَوْ نُذْرًا ﴿٦﴾
As justification or warning,
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَٰقِعٌۭ ﴿٧﴾
Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.
فَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ طُمِسَتْ ﴿٨﴾
So when the stars are obliterated
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتْ ﴿٩﴾
And when the heaven is opened
وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْ ﴿١٠﴾
And when the mountains are blown away
وَإِذَا ٱلرُّسُلُ أُقِّتَتْ ﴿١١﴾
And when the messengers' time has come...
لِأَىِّ يَوْمٍ أُجِّلَتْ ﴿١٢﴾
For what Day was it postponed?
لِيَوْمِ ٱلْفَصْلِ ﴿١٣﴾
For the Day of Judgement.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ﴿١٤﴾
And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿١٥﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿١٦﴾
Did We not destroy the former peoples?
ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ﴿١٧﴾
Then We will follow them with the later ones.
كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ﴿١٨﴾
Thus do We deal with the criminals.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿١٩﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءٍۢ مَّهِينٍۢ ﴿٢٠﴾
Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ فِى قَرَارٍۢ مَّكِينٍ ﴿٢١﴾
And We placed it in a firm lodging
إِلَىٰ قَدَرٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ ﴿٢٢﴾
For a known extent.
فَقَدَرْنَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْقَـٰدِرُونَ ﴿٢٣﴾
And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٢٤﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ كِفَاتًا ﴿٢٥﴾
Have We not made the earth a container
أَحْيَآءًۭ وَأَمْوَٰتًۭا ﴿٢٦﴾
Of the living and the dead?
وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ شَـٰمِخَـٰتٍۢ وَأَسْقَيْنَـٰكُم مَّآءًۭ فُرَاتًۭا ﴿٢٧﴾
And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٢٨﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ﴿٢٩﴾
[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ ظِلٍّۢ ذِى ثَلَـٰثِ شُعَبٍۢ ﴿٣٠﴾
Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns
لَّا ظَلِيلٍۢ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ ﴿٣١﴾
[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."
إِنَّهَا تَرْمِى بِشَرَرٍۢ كَٱلْقَصْرِ ﴿٣٢﴾
Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,
كَأَنَّهُۥ جِمَـٰلَتٌۭ صُفْرٌۭ ﴿٣٣﴾
As if they were yellowish [black] camels.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٣٤﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ لَا يَنطِقُونَ ﴿٣٥﴾
This is a Day they will not speak,
وَلَا يُؤْذَنُ لَهُمْ فَيَعْتَذِرُونَ ﴿٣٦﴾
Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٣٧﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ۖ جَمَعْنَـٰكُمْ وَٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿٣٨﴾
This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.
فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمْ كَيْدٌۭ فَكِيدُونِ ﴿٣٩﴾
So if you have a plan, then plan against Me.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٤٠﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى ظِلَـٰلٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ ﴿٤١﴾
Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs
وَفَوَٰكِهَ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ ﴿٤٢﴾
And fruits from whatever they desire,
كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ هَنِيٓـًٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ ﴿٤٣﴾
[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ ﴿٤٤﴾
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٤٥﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
كُلُوا۟ وَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُم مُّجْرِمُونَ ﴿٤٦﴾
[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٤٧﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱرْكَعُوا۟ لَا يَرْكَعُونَ ﴿٤٨﴾
And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ﴿٤٩﴾
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
فَبِأَىِّ حَدِيثٍۭ بَعْدَهُۥ يُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿٥٠﴾
Then in what statement after the Qur'an will they believe?
