📖 1 min readThe Eternal Refuge is one of the 99 beautiful names of Allah. Its meaning: The perfect Master to whom every creature turns in need.
To pronounce the name The Eternal Refuge in Arabic, we say: As-Samad.
It is written in Arabic: الصمد.
From the Arabic root ص-م-د (s-m-d, to turn toward or depend upon), صَمَد (samad) follows فَعَل and denotes the self-sufficient refuge sought by all.
The Name “The Eternal Refuge” means: The perfect Master to whom every creature turns in need. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to seek refuge in Allah, become trustworthy, and protect every right placed in one's care. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
