مَالِك (malik, owner) derives from م-ل-ك (m-l-k, possession), while الْمُلْك (al-mulk) means sovereignty; together they denote ownership of all dominion.
The Name “The Owner of Sovereignty” means: The One who owns all authority and disposes of every kingdom. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to govern the passions, exercise responsibility justly, and remember that all authority truly belongs to Allah. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
