📖 1 min readThe Watchful is one of the 99 beautiful names of Allah. Its meaning: The One who observes, guards, and knows all things without distraction.
To pronounce the name The Watchful in Arabic, we say: Ar-Raqib.
It is written in Arabic: الرقيب.
From the Arabic root ر-ق-ب (r-q-b, to watch), on the pattern فَعِيل (fa'il), it denotes ceaseless observation and guardianship over every being.
The Name “The Watchful” means: The One who observes, guards, and knows all things without distraction. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to practice inward watchfulness, fulfill duties carefully, and remain aware of the divine gaze. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
