Crescent Moon (Hilal) Visibility

Islamic Calendar > Crescent Moon (Hilal) Visibility

After conjunction (the astronomical new moon), the thin crescent may be observed in the western sky after sunset. This map shows the expected crescent visibility for each region of the world on the evening of conjunction and the following evening, according to the Odeh (2004) criterion.

Select a lunation, then compare the two evenings. Hover over (or tap) the map to read the visibility class of a location.

Lunation

Conjunction (new moon): 2026-10-10T15:50Z UTC
Expected hijri month: Rabi' al-Thani 1448

A: visible to the naked eye
B: visible with optical aid, possible to the naked eye
C: visible with optical aid only
D: not visible

Calculation method

The calculation applies the criterion by Muhammad Odeh (2004): the apparent angular separation between the sun and the moon (ARCL), the difference in altitude between the two bodies (ARCV) and the width of the crescent (W), evaluated at the best observing time after sunset. Classes A to D follow the visibility zones of the criterion. The world grid is spaced at 2 degrees.
