Biography of Aslam Abu Rafi'

Abu Rafi' converted to Islam. Abu Rafi', a servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His nickname prevailed over him, and there was a difference in his name. Ibn al-Madini said: His name is Aslam, and a similar one was said by Ibn Numayr. Another report states: Hormuz; according to another report, Ibrahim. He came before Ibrahim. He was a Copt. It belonged to al-Abbas, so he gave it to the Prophet ﷺ. Some reports state: He was a servant of Sa'id ibn al-Aas, so his sons, who were eight, inherited him, so they freed him. All of them except Khalid, for he held on to his share of it, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, spoke to him to free his share, or sell it, or give it away, but he did not do so. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted it to him, so he freed him. According to another account, He freed three of them, so Abu Rafi' came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, seeking help from those who had not been freed.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to them about it, so they gave it to him, so he freed him. This is a difference, and the correct view is that it was Abbas, the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ. So he gave him to the Prophet ﷺ, who freed him. Abu Rafi' used to say: (I am the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ), and the nobles of Medina remained behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, married his mistress Salma. She bore him Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Rafi'. Salma was the midwife of Ibrahim ibn the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and witnessed Khaybar with him. Ubayd Allah was Ali ibn Abi Talib's treasurer and his scribe during the days of his caliphate. Abu Rafi' witnessed Uhud, And the Trench, and the scenes beyond them. He did not witness Badr, because he was in Mecca, and his story with Abu Lahab when the news of Badr came to Mecca is famous. His two sons Ubayd Allah and Al-Hasan, and Ata' ibn Yasar narrated from him.

They differed about the time of his death, so another report states that he died before Uthman; in another account, he died during the caliphate of Ali. It was narrated by all three of them, and it is mentioned in the nicknames, Allah willing.
