Biography of Bilal ibn Rabah

Bilal bin Rabah was known by the kunya Abu Abdul Karim; other reports give Abu Abdullah or Abu Amr. His mother was Hamama, who was born in Mecca among Banu Jumah; another report places her origin in Al-Sarat. Bilal was the freedman of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq. He bought it for five uqiyahs; according to another report, for seven uqiyahs; in another account, for nine uqiyahs. He freed him for Allah's sake, peace be upon him. He was a muezzin for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and a treasurer. He witnessed Badr and all the scenes. He was one of the first to convert to Islam, and one of those who was punished for the sake of Allah, and was patient with the punishment. Abu Jahl used to slap him on his face in the sun, and put the mill on him until the sun melted him. He would say: Disbelieve in the Lord of Muhammad. He would say: Ahad.

So he passed Waraqah ibn Nawfal. He was torturing him. He would say: Ahad, Ahad. So he said: O Bilal, Ahad, Ahad. By Allah, if Die like this. I will take your grave as compassionate. Another report states: He was a servant of Banu Jumah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf used to torture him and continue to torment him, so Allah, decreed that Bilal killed him at Badr. Saeed bin Al-Musayyab said, and mentioned Bilal: He was stingy about his religion. He was tortured, so if the polytheists wanted him to approach them, he said: Allah, Allah. He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ met Abu Bakr, peace be upon him. He said: If we had anything, we would have bought Bilal. He said: Then he met Abu Bakr Al-Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib. He said: Buy Bilal for me, so Al-Abbas went off. He said To his mistress: Can you sell me this slave of yours before you lose his goodness?

She said: And what do you do with it, it is evil, and it is, and it is.. Then he met her and said to her the same as what he said, so he bought it from her and sent it to Abu Bakr, peace be upon him. another report states that Abu Bakr bought it while he was buried under the stones and was being tortured under them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a brotherhood with Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah. He used to give permission to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during his lifetime, both in travel and in public. He was the first to give permission to him in Islam.

Ya'ish ibn Sadaqa ibn Ali al-Furati, the Shafi'i jurist, informed us, with his chain of transmission through Ahmad ibn Shuaib, he said: Muhammad told us, on the authority of Maadan ibn Issa, Al-Hasan informed us Ibn Ayan, Zuhair told us, Al-Amash told us, on the authority of Ibrahim, on the authority of Al-Aswad bin Bilal, he said: The end of the call to prayer: Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, there is no god but Allah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died, he wanted to go to Syria, and Abu Bakr said to him: Rather, you will be with me. He said: If you free me for yourself So lock me up, and if you have freed me for the sake of Allah. Then leave me to go to Allah. He said: Go. So he went to the Levant, where he remained until he died.

And Some reports state: He gave permission to Abu Bakr, peace be upon him, after the Prophet ﷺ Abu Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim al-Dimashqi informed us, permitting it, my uncle informed us, Abu Talib ibn Yusuf informed us, he informed us Abu Muhammad al-Jawhari, Muhammad ibn al-Abbas informed us, Ahmad ibn Ma'rouf informed us, al-Husayn ibn al-Fahm informed us, Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us, Ismail ibn Abd informed us Allah bin Abi Uwais, Abd al-Rahman bin Saad bin Ammar bin Saad al-Mu'adhdhin, informed us, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ammar bin Saad and Ammar told me.

Bin Hafs bin Saad and Omar bin Hafs bin Omar bin Saad, on the authority of their fathers, on the authority of their grandfathers, that they told them, They said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died, Bilal came to Abu Bakr, peace be upon him, and said: O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, say: The best deed of the believers is jihad in the path of Allah. I wanted to be stationed in the path of Allah until I die, so Abu Bakr said: I adjure you by Allah, O Bilal, my sanctity and my right, I have grown old, and my end is approaching, so Bilal stayed with Abu Bakr until Abu Bakr died. When he died, Bilal came to Omar So he said to him as he said to Abu Bakr. He responded to him as Abu Bakr responded, but he refused. And According to another account, When Omar told him to stay with him, he refused: What prevents you from giving the call to prayer?

He said: I gave permission to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, until he died, then I gave permission to Abu Bakr until he died, because he was the guardian of my blessings. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he said: O Bilal, there is no better deed than jihad in the path of Allah. So he went out to the Levant as a mujahid. He gave permission to Omar ibn al-Khattab when he entered. He visited the Levant once. He was not seen crying more than that day. It was narrated on his authority by: Abu Bakr, Omar, Ali, Ibn Masoud, Abdullah bin Omar, Ka'b bin Ajrah, Osama bin Zaid, Jabir, Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, and Al-Baraa bin Azib, and a group of senior followers of Medina and the Levant narrated on his authority, and Abu Al-Darda' narrated that when Omar bin Al-Khattab entered from the conquest of Jerusalem to Al-Jabiya, he asked him Bilal wanted him to go to Syria, so he did so.

He said: And my brother Abu Ruwayhah, with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, made a brotherhood between me and him? He said: And your brother, so they stayed at home in Khawlan. He said to them: We have come to you as suitors, and we were unbelievers, so Allah guided us, and we were slaves, so Allah freed us, and we were poor, so Allah enriched us, so if they marry us, praise be to Allah, and if you reject us, there is no power nor strength except with Allah, so marry them. Then Bilal saw the Prophet ﷺ in his dream saying: What is this harshness, O Bilal? When is it time for you to visit us? So he became sad, and rode to Medina. He came to the grave of the Prophet ﷺ and began to weep by it and roll over it. Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein approached. He began to kiss them and embrace them. They said to him: We desire that you give the call to prayer during dawn. They actually built the roof of the mosque.

When he said: Allah is great, Allah is great, the city shook. When he said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, its excitement increased. So when he said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The women came out of their rooms, and no one was seen crying more than that day. Abu Ja`far bin Ahmad bin Ali, Ismail bin Ubaid Allah bin Ali, and Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Mihran told us, they said with his chain of transmission on the authority of Abu Issa Al-Tirmidhi, he said: Al-Hussein bin Harith told us, Ali bin Al-Hussein bin Waqid told us, my father told me, Abdullah bin Buraidah told us, on the authority of his father, he said: In the morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, called Bilal and said: O Bilal, why did you precede me in Paradise? I never entered Paradise without hearing your voice.

Imami, Omar bin Muhammad bin Al-Muammar, and others told us, they said: Hibat Allah bin Abdul-Wahid Al-Kateb informed us, Abu Talib Muhammad bin Ghaylan informed us, he told us Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Ibrahim, Abu Mansour bin Sulayman bin Muhammad bin Al-Fadl Al-Bajli told us, Ibn Abi Omar told us, Sufyan told us, on the authority of Sulayman Al-Taymi, on the authority of Abu Uthman Al-Nahdi, that Bilal said to the Prophet ﷺ: Do not precede me, Amen. Omar bin Al-Khattab, peace be upon him, used to say: Abu Bakr, our master. He freed our master, meaning: Bilal. Mujahid said: The first to demonstrate Islam in Mecca were seven: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Khabbab, Suhaib, Ammar, Bilal, and Sumayyah Umm Ammar. As for Bilal, he was humiliated for Allah's sake, peace be upon him. He was humiliated for his people.

So they took him and held him by the shoulders, then they put a rope of fiber around his neck, so they handed him to their boys. They started playing with him between the wooden trees. Mecca. When they got bored, they left him. As for the rest, their names are mentioned. Shababah narrated, on the authority of Ayyub ibn Sayyar, on the authority of Muhammad ibn al-Mankadir, on the authority of Jabir ibn Abdullah, on the authority of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, on the authority of Bilal, he said: I gave the call to prayer on a cold morning, so the Prophet ﷺ went out and did not see anyone in the mosque, so he said: Where are the people? I said: The cold imprisoned them. He said: Oh Allah, remove the cold from them. He said: I saw them wandering in prayer. Al-Hamani and others narrated it on the authority of Ayyub, but they did not mention Abu Bakr.

Muhammad bin Saad, the writer of Al-Waqidi, said: Bilal died in Damascus, and was buried at Bab al-Saghir in the year twenty. He was sixty-few years old. Another report states: He died in the year seven or eighteen, and Ali bin Abdul Rahman said: Bilal died in Aleppo, and was buried at Bab al-Arba'in. Adam was thick-skinned, thin, tall, and of short stature. Abu Omar said: He has a brother named Khaled, and a sister named: Ghafira.
