Biography of Khubayb ibn Adi

(B D ') Khubayb ibn Adi ibn Malik ibn Amir ibn Majda'a ibn Hujbi ibn Awf ibn Kulfa ibn Awf ibn Amr ibn Awf ibn Malik ibn al-Aws al-Ansari al-Awsi. He was present at Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Abd al-Wahhab ibn Hibat Allah ibn Abd al-Wahhab informed us with his chain to Abd Allah ibn Ahmad, my father narrated to me, he said:

Sulayman ibn Dawud narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Sa'd informed us, on the authority of al-Zuhri and Ya'qub, he said: My father narrated to us, on the authority of al-Zuhri, my father said (١), meaning Ahmad: and this is the hadith of Sulayman al-Hashimi, on the authority of Umar ibn Usayd ibn Jariya al-Thaqafi, an ally of Banu Zuhra, and he was among the companions of Abu Hurayra, that Abu Hurayra said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ten persons as a reconnaissance party, and put in command over them Asim ibn Thabit ibn Abi al-Aqlah al-Ansari, the maternal grandfather of Asim ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab (٢), so they set off until, when they were at al-Hadda, between Usfan and Mecca, they were mentioned to a clan of Hudhayl called: Banu Lihyan, so they rushed out toward them with nearly a hundred archers, and they tracked their traces until they found their food, dates, in a halting place where they had stopped, they said: This is the date stones of Yathrib; so they followed their traces, and when Asim and his companions sensed them, they took refuge on a high ground (٣), so the people surrounded them and said: Come down and give yourselves up (٤), and you have the covenant and the pledge that we will not kill any of you, so Asim ibn Thabit the commander of the company said: As for me, by Allah, I will not come down under the protection of a disbeliever; O Allah, inform Your Prophet about us; so they shot them with arrows and killed Asim along with seven, and three persons came down to them under the covenant and the pledge, among them: Khubayb al-Ansari, and Zayd ibn al-Dathina, and another man (٥), and when they had got hold of them, they loosened the strings of their bows and bound them with them, so the third man said: This is the first treachery, by Allah I will not accompany you; I have in these an example, meaning the slain; so they dragged him and struggled with him, but he refused to accompany them, so they killed him, and they set off with Khubayb and Zayd ibn al-Dathina until they sold them at Mecca after the battle of Badr, so Banu al-Harith ibn Amir ibn Nawfal ibn Abd Manaf bought: Khubayb, and Khubayb was the one who had killed al-Harith ibn Amir ibn Nawfal on the day of Badr (٦), so Khubayb remained with them a captive until they resolved upon killing him, so he borrowed from one of the daughters of al-Harith a razor with which to shave his pubic hair (٧) for the killing, and she lent it to him, and a little son of hers toddled off, she said:

while I was heedless, until he reached him and I found him seating him on his thigh with the razor in his hand, she said: so I was startled with a fright that Khubayb recognized, so he said: Do you think I will kill him? I would not do that, she said: By Allah, I never saw a captive better than Khubayb; by Allah, I once found him eating a bunch (١) of grapes in his hand, while he was bound in iron, and there was no fruit at Mecca, and she used to say: It was indeed a provision that Allah provided to Khubayb; so when they took him out of the Sanctuary to kill him in the profane land, Khubayb said to them: Let me pray two rak'as, so they left him, and he prayed two rak'as, then said: By Allah, were it not that you would think that what is in me is dread of death, I would have prayed more; O Allah, count them in number, and kill them scattered (٢), and leave not one of them:

And I do not care, when I am killed as a Muslim ... on which side, for the sake of Allah, my fall may be; And that is in the cause of the Allah, and if He wills ... He will bless the joints of a dismembered, torn body (٣)

Then Abu Sirwa'a Uqba ibn al-Harith rose toward him and killed him. And Khubayb was the one who established for every Muslim killed in captivity (sabr) the prayer; and Allah answered Asim ibn Thabit on the day he was struck down, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed his companions, when they were struck down, of their news, and some people of Quraysh sent to Asim ibn Thabit, when they were told that he had been killed, to bring something of him by which he might be recognized- for he had killed a great man of theirs on the day of Badr- so Allah sent against Asim something like a canopy of hornets (٤), which protected him from their messengers, so they were unable to cut anything from him.

Thus in this narration: that Banu al-Harith ibn Amir bought Khubayb, but Ibn Ishaq said: Khubayb was bought by Hujayr ibn Abi Ihab al-Tamimi, an ally of theirs, and Hujayr (٥) was the maternal brother of al-Harith ibn Amir, so he bought him for Uqba ibn al-Harith to kill him in revenge for his father.

And it is said: there shared in buying him: Abu Ihab ibn Aziz, and Ikrima ibn Abi Jahl, and al-Akhnas ibn Shariq, and Ubayda ibn Hakim ibn al-Awqas, and Umayya ibn Abi Utba, and Banu al-Hadrami, and Safwan ibn Umayya, and they are the sons of those of the polytheists who were killed on the day of Badr, and they handed him over to Uqba ibn al-Harith, who imprisoned him in his house, and when they wished to kill him, they took him out to al-Tan'im (٦), so he prayed two rak'as, and said:

The confederates have indeed gathered around me and rallied (٧) ... their tribes, and they have mustered every gathering; And they have brought near their sons and their women ... and I have been brought near to a long, fortified palm trunk; And every one of them shows enmity strenuously ... against me, because I am in bonds in a place of perdition; To Allah I complain of my exile after my distress ... and of what the confederates have gathered for me at my downfall; So O Lord of the Throne, give me steadfastness over what has befallen me ... for they have cut my flesh, and my hope is gone astray; And that is in the cause of the Allah, and if He wills ... He will bless the joints of a dismembered, torn body; And they have offered disbelief, but death is nearer than it ... and my two eyes have welled though without tears flowing; And there is in me no dread of death- indeed I am one to die ... but my dread is the heat of a fire that blazes; And I am not one to display to the enemy submissiveness ... nor anguish, for indeed to Allah is my return; And I do not care, when I am killed as a Muslim ... on which side, for the sake of Allah, my fall may be. And he was the first to be crucified for the sake of Allah.

And the name of the boy who toddled over to Khubayb so that he took him: Abu Husayn ibn al-Harith ibn Amir ibn Nawfal ibn Abd Manaf, and he is the grandfather of Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Husayn, the shaykh of Malik.

Abu Ja'far Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Ali informed us with his chain to Yunus ibn Bukayr, on the authority of Ibrahim ibn Isma'il, Ja'far ibn Amr ibn Umayya al-Damri informed me: that his father narrated to him, on the authority of his grandfather- and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him as a reconnaissance man alone, he said:

I came to the post (khashaba) of Khubayb and climbed up it while I was fearful of the watchers, so I untied him and he fell to the ground, then I plunged away and looked back, and it was as though the earth had swallowed him, and no trace of Khubayb has been mentioned after that until this hour.

And Asim had given Allah a covenant that he would never touch a polytheist nor a polytheist touch him ever, so Allah protected him after his death when they wished to take something from him, and Allah sent the hornets and protected him.

The three brought it out.

Usayd: with fatha of the hamza and kasra of the sin, and it is al-Barrad with a single-dotted ba' and a ra' and at its end an undotted dal (١).

And Usayd ibn Jariya: also with fatha of the hamza and kasra of the sin, and Jariya with a jim.
