Biography of Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib
Safiya bint Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf al-Qurashiyah, the Hashemite aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She is the mother of al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam. Her mother is Hala bint Wahib bin Abd Manaf bin Zahra. She is the sister of Hamza, al-Muqawam, and Hajal of the sons of Abd al-Muttalib. There was no difference in her conversion to Islam from the aunts of the Prophet ﷺ and it differed in Atika and Arwa, and what is true is that no one else converted to Islam. She was in The pre-Islamic era had married her to Al-Harith bin Harb bin Umayyah bin Abd Shams, the brother of Abu Sufyan bin Harb. He died while still her husband. Then Al-Awwam bin Khuwaylid married her. She bore him Al-Zubair and Abdul-Kaaba. She lived a long time, and died in the year twentieth of the caliphate of Omar bin Al-Khattab, when she was seventy-three years old. She was buried in Al-Baqi'.
Another report states: The Al-Awwam married her first, but not for anything, said Abu Omar. And when her brother Hamza was killed, she found a grandfather on him. I was very patient. I had great patience. Reported by Abu Jaafar, on the authority of Ibn Ishaq, who said: Al-Zuhri, Asim bin Omar bin Qatada, Muhammad bin Yahya bin Hibban, Al-Husayn bin Abdul Rahman bin Amr bin Saad bin Muadh, and other of our scholars, told me about the Battle of Uhud and the killing of Hamzah.
He said: Then Safiya bint Abdul Muttalib came to see Hamzah at Uhud. He was her maternal brother, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: May Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, to her son Al-Zubair: "Cast her and bring her back so that she will not see what is wrong with her brother." So Al-Zubair met her and said: "Oh, his mother, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to return." She said: "Why, I have been informed that my brother has been mutilated, and that is for the sake of Allah, so we were not satisfied with what happened."
