Biography of Zayd ibn Haritha
Zaid bin Haritha bin Sharaheel bin Ka'b bin Abd al-Uzza bin Imru' al-Qais bin Aamir bin al-Nu'man bin Aamir bin Abd Wad bin Awf bin Kinana bin Bakr bin Awf bin Adhrah bin Zaid al-Lat bin Rufaidah bin Thawr bin Kalb bin Wabra bin Taghlib (3) bin Helwan bin Imran bin Lahaf bin Qada'ah. This is how Ibn al-Kalbi and others attributed it to him. They may have differed in the names, prioritizing some over others, adding something and subtracting something. Al-Kalbi said: His mother was Sa'di bint Tha'labah bin Abd Aamir bin Aflat from Banu Ma'n from Tayy. Ibn Ishaq said: Haritha bin Sharhabeel (4). He did not follow up on him, but he was Sharaheel, and his nickname was Abu Osama. He is the client of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He is the most famous of his servants. He is the love of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
He was afflicted with captivity in pre-Islamic times because his mother went out with him to visit her people, the Banu Ma'an, and the horses of the Banu al-Qayn ibn Jisr attacked them, so they took Zayd and brought him to the market of Ukaz, so Hakim ibn Hazzam bought him for his paternal aunt Khadija bint Khuwaylid; according to another report, he bought him. From the market of Abyssinia (5), Khadija gave him to the Prophet ﷺ in Mecca before his prophethood when he was eight years old. Another report states: Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saw him in Batha in Mecca calling for him to be sold, so he came to Khadija and mentioned him to her, so he bought him from her money, so she gave him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he freed him and adopted him.
Ibn Omar said: We did not call upon Zaid bin Haritha except Zaid bin Muhammad, until Allah Almighty revealed: "Call them by their fathers (6)" and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, made a brotherhood between him and Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib, peace be upon him. His father Sharaheel had felt his loss deeply, so he said about it (7): I wept for... Zaid and I do not know what he did... Is he alive in hope or he has come before him? I am afraid, by Allah, I do not know, and if you are asking... the plain of the earth has deceived you or the mountain has deceived you. I wish my poetry would you return to eternity... so count me from this world as your return to me with reverence (1) The sun reminds me of him when it rises... and his memory appears when the child approaches (2) even if the spirits come His remembrance has become agitated... How long have I grieved for him, O Glory be to Him (3) I will work hard as hard as the night (4) in the land...
and I will not tire of wandering around or tire of my life or my death come to me... And every mortal, even if he is tempted by smoothness, I will recommend to him Qais and Umar both... and he recommended to Yazid and after him Bali', meaning Jablah bin Haritha, Zayd's brother. He was older. From Zaid. He means when he says: Yazid: Zaid's maternal brother. He is Yazid bin Ka'b bin Sharahil. Then some people from Kalb went on Hajj and saw Zaid, so he recognized them and they recognized him, so he said to them: Tell my family these verses about me, for I know that they were upset over me, so he said: Be kind to my people, even if you are far away... for I am confined to the house at the places, so refrain from the anger that has quarreled with you... and do not work on the land. Al-Abā'r's text states, "Thank Allah, I am in the best family... honorable people, one after another.
So the Kalbīs set off and informed his father and described to him where he was, and who he was with. Then Haritha and his brother Ka'b, the sons of Sharahīl, went out to ransom him. They came to Mecca and entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and said: O son of Abd al-Muttalib, O son of Hashim, O son of the master of his people, we have come to you with our son, so be gracious to us. And he was kind to us in his ransom. He said: Who is he? They said: Zaid bin Haritha. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said, "Is there anything else?" They said: What is it? He said: Call him and give him a choice. If he chooses you. He then is yours, and if he chooses me, then by Allah, I am not the one who chooses anyone over the one who chooses me. They said: You have given us more than half and done well. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, called him and said: Do you know these people? He said: Yes, this is my father and this is my uncle.
He said: I am the one you have known and seen as my companion, so choose me or choose them. He said: I do not want them. I am not the one who chooses anyone over you. You are my father and uncle's place for me. They said: Woe to you, Zaid. Do you choose slavery over freedom and over your father and your family?! He said: Yes, I have seen (5) something of this man. I would never choose anyone over him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saw that, he took him out to Al-Hijr, and said: O you who are present, bear witness that Zaid, my son, inherits from me and I inherit from him. When his father and uncle saw that, their souls were happy and they left. Muammar narrated, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, who said: We did not know of anyone who converted to Islam before Zaid bin Haritha. Abdul Razzaq said: No one mentioned him except Al-Zuhri.
Abu Omar said: It was narrated on the authority of Al-Zuhri in several ways that the first to convert to Islam was Khadija. Ibn Ishaq said: Ali came after Khadija, then Zaid converted to Islam after him, then Abu Bakr. Others said: Abu Bakr, then Ali, then Zaid. Zaid bin Haritha witnessed Badr. He was the one who brought the herald of victory and victory to Medina, and the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, was his mistress, Umm Ayman. She bore him: Osama bin Zaid. He was the husband of Zainab bint Jahsh, who was the cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She was the one whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, married after Zaid.
Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Mahran, and more than one person, told us, with their chain of transmission to Muhammad bin Isa Al-Salma, he said: Ali Ibn Hajar told us, Dawud bin Al-Zabarqan told us, on the authority of Dawud bin Abi Hind, on the authority of Al-Sha'bi, on the authority of Aisha, who said, If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, had concealed any of the revelation, he would have suppressed this verse: "And when you said to him whom Allah has bestowed And you have bestowed blessings upon him. Keep your husband safe from yourself and fear Allah, and you hide within yourself what Allah will reveal and you fear people, and Allah is more deserving that you should fear Him.
To the Almighty's saying: "And the command of Allah was carried out (1)" When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, married her, meaning Zainab, they said: He married his son's harlot, so Allah Almighty revealed: "Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Seal of the Prophet ﷺs (2)﴿. Zaid was called: Zaid bin Muhammad, so Allah, revealed: "Call them by their fathers. This is fairer in the sight of Allah (3)" the verse. This hadith was narrated on the authority of Dawud bin Abi Hind, on the authority of Al-Sha'bi, on the authority of Masruq, on the authority of Aisha. Reported by Abu al-Fadl bin Abi al-Hasan bin Abi Abdullah al-Makhzoumi, on the authority of al-Baraa bin Azib, who said: O Messenger of Allah, you have made brotherhood between me and Hamza.
Reported by Abdul Wahhab bin Hibat Allah bin Abi Hibba, on the authority of Wael bin Dawud, who said: I heard Al-Bahi narrating that Aisha used to say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, did not send Zaid bin Haritha in a troop without his command over them, and if he had remained, he would have appointed him as his successor after him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, marched the army to the Levant, he appointed Zaid bin Haritha as their commander, and said: If he is killed, then it will be Ja`far bin Abi Talib, and if he is killed, then Abdullah bin Rawahah. So Zaid was killed in Mu'tah in the land of the Levant in Jumada of the year eight of the Hijra. We have investigated the incident regarding Abdullah bin Rawahah and Ja`far, so we will not mention it at length here.
