Doubting having prayed, redoing ablution endlessly: the Prophet's rule against obsessive doubt and the method to get free.

Obsessive doubt (waswasa) is an ancient weapon: the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave the rule that defeats it:

Allah has pardoned my community the heart's whisper (waswasa), as long as it is not spoken or acted upon.

al-Bukhari 6664

The golden rule in prayer: doubt does not count

  • Doubting 3 or 4 rak'as: take the likeliest, complete, do the 2 prostrations of forgetfulness (Muslim 571); never redo the prayer for mere doubt.
  • Doubting purity (urinated, touched, broke ablution without certainty): certainty prevails, doubt does not break: "do not leave prayer unless you perceive a sound or smell" (al-Bukhari 137); purity doubt does not force redoing.
  • Doubting the ablution count: one suffices; redoing without certainty of breakage enters the blamed waswasa.

Installed waswasa (recurring case)

The Prophet said: satan comes to one of you saying: who created you? until he says: Allah, then: who created Allah? When one of you reaches that, let him say: I believed in Allah and His messengers.

summary of Abu Hurayra's hadith, Muslim 134
  • The prophetic circuit-breaker: say the reported formula ("I believed in Allah and His messengers") and cut off: do not dialogue with the thought, do not seek to prove it.
  • Refuge and continue: "The Prophet said: satan comes to one of you during prayer and disturbs it... when you feel him, spit 3 times to the left and seek refuge in Allah from him" (Muslim 2203): bodily gesture, then normal resumption.
  • Fix one rule and never transgress it: scholars order the waswasa-afflicted to close the door: pray once, one ablution, one honest count, and ignore any relaunch: fiqh's treatment, confirmed by medicine (obsession CBT).
  • Ibn Baz (Fatawa Nur ala ad-Darb, pp. 11-12): the limbs' stillness remains due despite waswasa (the Bedouin's hadith, ordered to redo his prayer); the prophetic remedy: spit 3 times to the left, seek refuge in Allah, then fight one's soul without obeying satan.
  • Ibn Baz (ad-Durar as-Saniyya, vol. 10, pp. 62 and 124): never leave the prayer nor redo the ablution on mere doubt: "he does not leave before hearing a sound or smelling an odor" (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
  • al-Bahuti, Kashshaf al-Qina (p. 459): if waswasa dominates most of the prayer, it is not invalidated; khushu' is a sunna per the jumhur (a dissenting view exists), and no prostration is due for leaving a sunna (Thawban's hadith: "for every omission, 2 prostrations", reported by Ahmad and Abu Dawud 1038).

What to never do faced with waswasa

  • Redo the prayer "to be sure": it feeds obsession and multiplies doubt (explicit scholars' rule: the waswasa-afflicted never redoes).
  • Seek internet opinions adding conditions: stick to one's scholar and the consensus rule.
  • Believe oneself excluded from mercy: waswasa is a sign of fought faith; the Prophet comforted the afflicted (the Companion saying he was ruined by such thoughts was comforted: "it is manifest faith", Muslim 132).

Practical note on waswasa in prayer

The waswasa plan in 3 lines: one ablution per prayer time, one prayer per time, the 2 prostrations on rak'a doubt, and the circuit-breaker formula at any intrusive thought. Constancy extinguishes doubt's fire; checking feeds it.
