📖 3 min readIn Persian: "buzurg-o-niru", meaning: forbidden. Some knowers said that the one who eats the unlawful and the doubtful is repelled from the door without any doubt. Do you not see that the one in major ritual impurity is barred from entering the House of Allah, and the one in minor impurity is forbidden to touch His Book, even though major and minor impurity are two lawful states; how then the one immersed in the filth of the unlawful and the mire of doubtful things? He is without doubt also repelled from the courtyard of nearness, not permitted to enter the sanctuary.
Haram: what Allah has forbidden and prohibited to be done; and it may, by context, mean the sacred, made inviolable; it is the opposite of halal.
When to say it? When speaking of a forbidden and prohibited matter
That whose doing is censured by the Law.
That which is forbidden, whether by divine or human subjugation, or by a bar arising from reason, from humanity, or from Him whose command is awaited.
The opposite of halal. Ar-Raghib said: "haram is that which one is forbidden".
That whose doing is forbidden, whether by divine subjugation, a human bar, a bar of reason, of the Law, or of Him whose command is awaited. And every prohibition not from Allah is nothing. In the noble hadith: it is what Allah forbade in His Book. Among the Hanafis: that whose prohibition is established by a decisive proof. Among the Shafi'is: what is established by certain proof, consensus, analogy, preference, or equivalence. According to Ibn Hajar: what the Lawgiver explicitly forbade with a threat of punishment. Among the Ibadis: what bears in itself an unlawful quality, or whose cause bears a defect leading to it; among this, what is verified as forbidden while its lawfulness remains possible.
