Definition Al-islam

Al-islam according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

Humility and submission to what the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reported. In al-Kashshaf: whatever consists in a declaration of the tongue without the heart following it is islam; and where the heart follows the tongue, it is iman. I say: this is the school of ash-Shafi'i; as for the school of Abu Hanifa, there is no difference between the two.

Al-islam according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

(In Persian: "to submit and obey"): humility and submission to what the Messenger (may prayer and peace be upon him) reported. And in al-Kashshaf: whatever consists in a declaration of the tongue without the heart following it is islam; and where the heart follows the tongue, it is iman.

Al-islam according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: compliance, submission, entering into peace or into the religion of islam; islam also has the sense of islaf: that is, concluding a peace agreement; one says: I concluded a peace with so-and-so for twenty, meaning: I bought from him on credit for a spot price. In the Law, its meaning varies according to whether it occurs alone or paired with iman. Alone, it means: entering the religion of islam, or the religion of islam itself. Entering the religion: the servant submits to Allah by following what the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) brought: the tongue's testimony, the heart's belief, or the limbs' deed. Al-Jurjani said: islam is humility and submission to what the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reported. And in "al-Kashshaf": whatever consists in a declaration of the tongue without the heart following it is islam; and where the heart follows the tongue, it is iman. I say: this is the school of ash-Shafi'i. As for the school of Abu Hanifa: there is no difference between the two. Paired with iman, it means: the outward works of the limbs, in word and deed, like the two testimonies, the prayer, and the other pillars of islam; and when iman occurs alone, it then means the belief of the heart and faith in Allah, the Most High.

Al-islam according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

Submission to the rules of religion, outwardly and inwardly.

Al-islam according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

"Our Lord, make us die in submission": it is humility and submission to what our master the Messenger Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reported; thus said as-Sayyid in "ad-Dur al-Mukhtar": it is affirming our master Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in everything that comes from Allah, the Most High, whose delivery is known by necessity, that is, self-evidently.

Al-islam In the Quran
