Al-ʿarya according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

With the gemination of the ya: it is the transfer of usufruct without compensation. The transfers are of four kinds: the transfer of the thing itself with compensation is sale, without compensation gift; the transfer of usufruct with compensation is hire, without compensation the loan for use ('ariyya).

Al-ʿarya according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

In Al-Kifaya and As-Sihah: al-'ariyya, with the gemination of the lower ya of two dots, as though it were derived from al-'ar (shame), because seeking it is shame and defect. In Al-Maghrib: al-'ariyya is on that pattern, derived from al-'iara, the verbal noun of i'ara, as ghara of ighara; and it was taken from al-'ar in the sense of defect, or from al-'urw, which is an error. In Al-Mabsut: it was said to be from at-ta'awur, which is alternation: the lender let another enjoy his property in turn, on condition that the turn return to him by reclaiming whenever he wished; hence al-i'ara for measured and weighed things is a loan (qard), because one benefits from it only by consuming the thing, and the turn does not return to him in the ownership of the object for it to be a loan proper; the turn returns to him only in the ownership of its value. It is thus defective in the 'ayn, and some allowed that it is defective in the lam, from 'urw with a damma and a sukun, the verbal noun of 'ara ya'ri: he is naked and bare, of the pattern of 'alima; the ya is a ya of derivation: the contract was named by it because it strips of compensation. Al-ʿarya according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

With gemination: as though it were derived from shame, because seeking it is shame and defect; one declaims: our souls, in truth, are naked ... and bare.

Al-ʿarya according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

A fi'liyya form from al-mu'awara, which is borrowing; hence one says ta'awarna al-'awari (we lent one another the objects).

Al-ʿarya according to Mu'jam Lughat al-Fuqaha

With geminated ya, on the well-known reading, lightening being permitted; plural: awari; the lent thing.

Al-ʿarya according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

In the Law: the transfer of usufruct without compensation. It has been said: it is al-ma'un in the Exalted's saying: (and withhold the ma'un) (Al-Ma'un: 7). And al-'ari: he who has taken off his clothes.
