From khalata a thing with a thing, khaltan: that is, joining it to it. Ikhtilat, in language: the joining of a thing to a thing, distinguishable afterward, as in animals, or not, as in some liquids, and then it is a blend; and he frequented the people with mukhalata: that is, entered among them. And he frequented him with khilatan: mixed with him; and the disease frequented him with khimata: seized him; and his mind was mixed (khulita): his mind grew disturbed. Al-Marzuqi said: khalt's origin is the interpenetration of things' parts some into others, usage widening until one says of a man he is khality if he mixes much with people; the plural is khulata, like sharif and shurafa; hence Ibn Faris said: al-khalit the neighbor and al-khalit the partner; mixing may allude to intercourse, hence the jurists' saying: he mixed with her as husbands mix, meaning intercourse. Al-Azhari said: al-khilat is the man's mixing with his family when he has intercourse with her. (Al-Misbah al-Munir, 1/242; al-Mu'jam al-Wasit, 1/229; al-Mawsu'a al-Fiqhiyya, 2/289).
