Definition Al-ʿmd

Al-ʿmd according to Al-Kulliyat (Al-Kafawi)

It is the killer striking the victim with what dismembers the parts, such as a weapon or the like.

Al-ʿmd according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

It is intent (qasd) together with intellect; hence there is no 'amd for the insane. Al-'Allama at-Taftazani (may God have mercy on him) said in at-Talwih, in verifying the recitation of the Quran: 'and it is said: without intent, otherwise he would be insane and would be treated, or a heretic and would be killed'; end of quote. His words 'without intent, otherwise,' to the end, mean that he recites forgetfully, and were he not reciting forgetfully he would be insane and would be treated, or a heretic and would be killed; he does not mean that there is no 'amd for the insane, given what passed: that 'amd is intent together with intellect. Understand.

Al-ʿmd according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: to intend a thing and to lean upon it; it is what is meant by intention (niyya). One says: 'ta'ammadahu wa-ta'ammada lahu wa-'amada ilayhi wa-lahu': he intended it. (Al-Mawsu'a al-Fiqhiyya 30/307).

Al-ʿmd according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

Intending a thing and leaning upon it.
