Definition Al-asthlal-

Al-asthlal- according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

That the child manifest what attests his life: crying, or moving a limb or the eye.

Al-asthlal- according to Mufradat (Ar-Raghib)

It is that the child manifest what attests his life: raising the voice or moving a limb, thus in 'al-Tabyin'.

Al-asthlal- according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

Raising the voice, and that the child manifest what attests his life: crying or moving the eye or another limb. In the Fatawa of 'Alamgiri: whoever utters a cry after birth is named, washed, and prayed over; whoever does not utter a cry is not prayed over but is washed outside the explicit transmission (zahir al-riwaya), and that is the chosen view. Likewise in the Hidaya: istihlal is that by which the life of the child is known, a sound or a movement, end of quote.

Al-asthlal- according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: the verbal noun of 'istahala'; 'the crescent istahala': it appeared; 'istihlal of the infant': raising his voice in crying at his birth; 'al-ihlal': raising the voice saying: 'There is no god but Allah'; 'ahalla the pilgrim in ihram': raising his voice with the talbiya.
