Al-astylad according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

Seeking a child from the slave girl (ama).

Al-astylad according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

In language: seeking a child in general; in the law: seeking a child from the slave girl, whether owned or married, as you will learn under umm al-walad, Allah willing; it is thus one of the predominant names.

Al-astylad according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: the verbal noun of 'istawlada l-rajulu l-mar'a': when he makes her pregnant, whether she is free or enslaved, meaning seeking the child. The Hanafis: seeking the child in general, for the intensified form denotes the seeking of the act. In technical usage: the Hanafis: seeking the child from the slave girl, and every owned woman whose child's paternity is established.
