Definition Al-brhan

Al-brhan according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

It is the syllogism composed of certain truths, whether immediate, that is, self-evident, or mediate, that is, speculative; and its middle term must be the cause of the major's relation to the minor; if it is also the cause of that relation's existence in the external, it is a burhan limmi, as when we say: this has humors in putrefaction, and all that has humors in putrefaction is feverish, so this is feverish: the humors' putrefaction, cause of the fever's being established in the mind, is likewise cause of its establishment in the external; otherwise it is cause of the relation only in the mind, and it is a burhan inni, as when we say: this is feverish and has humors in putrefaction, so this has humors in putrefaction: the fever, though cause of the humors' putrefaction being established in the mind, is not its cause in the external, but the reverse.
