Al-dlyl according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

In language: the guide and that by which one is guided; technically: that whose knowledge necessitates knowledge of something else; the dalil's reality is the middle's being established for the minor, and the minor's falling under the middle.

Al-dlyl according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

In language: the guide and that by which one is guided. Technically: it is used sometimes synonymously with burhan, the syllogism composed of two certain premises; sometimes synonymously with qiyas, an argument composed of two propositions from which a speculative sought object follows of itself; but this use in that sense is rare. It is used sometimes synonymously with hujja, an affirmative known leading to an affirmative unknown; and what is cited to remove obscurity in the self-evident is called tanbih. It is also said: the dalil is that whose knowledge necessitates knowledge of something else, the madlul; and by knowledge of something else is meant certain knowledge, for what whose knowledge necessitates mere surmise of something else is not called dalil but imara.

Al-dlyl according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: it is used for two things: it is cited meaning the sign established to know what it signifies; hence smoke was named dalil of fire, and the work dalil of the maker. It may be cited meaning the dalil: (fa'il) in the sense of (fa'il), as 'alim and qadir meaning knowing and powerful; hence one says: 'the dalil of the caravan', and God Most High is named dalil in annexation: one says in supplication: 'O dalil of the bewildered'. In the usage of the Law they differed: some said the dalil's reality is the dalil itself. Some said the dalil's reality is the sign indicating what it signifies, on the basis of usage in all the places in language. But it is sounder to say: it is the name of the dalil in language's proper sense, but in customary use it became the name of the relation, its reality thus conventional. Others said: that by which sound examination attains a reported sought object, categorical or probable.
