Definition Al-dwran

Al-dwran according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

In language: circling about a thing. As a technical term: a thing's following from another suited to be its efficient cause, as diarrhea follows the drinking of scammony; the first is called da'ir, the second madar. It is of three kinds: first, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in existence but not nonexistence, like drinking scammony for diarrhea: whenever it exists the diarrhea exists; if it does not exist, the diarrhea is not necessarily absent, for it may arise from another drug. Second, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in nonexistence but not existence, like life for knowledge: if it does not exist, knowledge does not exist; if it exists, knowledge does not necessarily exist. Third, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in both existence and nonexistence, like the fornication of one who has consummated marriage (muhsan), entailing stoning: whenever it exists stoning is obligatory, and when it does not exist, it is not obligatory.

Al-dwran according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

In language: circling about a thing; the waw is not changed to alif because of its being mobile and the openness of what precedes it, no impediment being given by the word's signification of motion and agitation. As a technical term: a thing's following from another suited to be its efficient cause, as drunkenness follows drinking wine; the first is called da'ir, the second madar. In other words: a thing's being conjoined with another in existence and nonexistence; it is of three kinds: first, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in existence and not nonexistence, like drinking wine for drunkenness: whenever it exists, drunkenness exists; if it does not exist, drunkenness is not necessarily absent, for it may come from drinking henbane. Second, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in nonexistence and not existence, like the hand's existence for writing: if the hand does not exist, writing does not exist; if it exists, writing does not necessarily exist. Third, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in both existence and nonexistence, like the fornication of the muhsan, owing to the obligation of stoning: whenever it exists, stoning is obligatory; whenever it does not exist, it is not.

Al-dwran according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: whirling; derived from 'dara ash-shay' yaduru hawlan wa-dawran' (the thing turned, circling and revolving). As a technical term: ar-Razi defined it as subsisting with subsisting and vanishing with vanishing, that is, the ruling's subsistence with the description's subsistence and its vanishing with the description's vanishing; the description is called madar and the ruling da'ir. It was also defined: a thing's following from another suited to be its efficient cause, in existence and nonexistence; mentioned by Shaykh Zakariyya. Some called it existential and non-existential dawran, or absolute dawran; when such that the ruling exists with the description, it is called existential dawran or tard (direct concomitance); when such that the ruling vanishes with the description's vanishing, it is called non-existential dawran or 'aks (inverse concomitance). It is of three kinds: first, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in existence and not nonexistence, like drinking scammony for diarrhea: whenever it exists, diarrhea exists; if it does not, diarrhea is not necessarily absent, for it may arise from another drug. Second, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in nonexistence and not existence, like life for knowledge: if it does not exist, knowledge does not exist; if it exists, knowledge does not necessarily exist. Third, the madar being the cause of the da'ir in both existence and nonexistence, like the fornication of the muhsan, entailing stoning: whenever it exists, stoning is obligatory; when it does not, it is not.
