A verbal noun, from your saying 'aftara l-sa'im' (to break the fast). 'Al-fitra', with kasra: the original disposition (khliqa), as al-Jawhari said. Ibn Qudama (may Allah have mercy on him) said in 'al-Mughni' that this alms is annexed to the fitra because it becomes obligatory upon breaking the fast of Ramadan. Ibn Qutayba said: it was called fitra because al-fitra is the original disposition, as Allah, exalted be He, said: 'the original disposition of Allah upon which He created mankind'.
'The thing, fatran': to split it. 'The matter': to invent it. 'Allah, the All-knowing': to originate it at first. In the Quran: 'I turn my face to Him who created the heavens and the earth, as a hanif, and I am not of the polytheists' (al-An'am 79). 'The faster': to cause him to break his fast. 'The man': to prepare for him what to break his fast with. 'Al-fatr': the split; plural: futur. 'Al-fitr': the breaking of the fast. 'The first grape seeds as they appear'.
With fatha: its origin is the lengthwise split, which may occur by way of corruption or by way of good. 'Allah fatara the creation': it is to originate the thing and bring it forth in a form disposed to action, among actions.
