Definition Al-ḥyḍ

Al-ḥyḍ according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

In language: flowing. In sacred Law: the blood shed by the womb of an adult woman who is free from illness and from immaturity. By his saying "the womb of a woman" he guarded against the blood of istihada (continuous spotting) and the bloods issuing from elsewhere; by his saying "free from illness" he guarded against the lochia (nifas), since these have the ruling of illness, to the point that her disposal of a third (of her estate) is taken into account; and by "immaturity" he guarded against the blood seen by a nine-year-old girl, which counts for nothing in sacred Law.

Al-ḥyḍ according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

In language: that which issues from a thing and flows from it. One says "the female rabbit has flowed" (hadat al-arnab) when blood flows from it, and "the tree has flowed" (hadat ash-shajara) when gum issues from it. In sacred Law: the blood shed by the womb of a woman free from illness and from immaturity.

Their saying "the womb of a woman" is a guard against blood issuing from elsewhere, and their saying "free from illness" is a guard against the blood of istihada and against the lochia, since the lochia have the ruling of illness, to the point that her disposal of a third of the estate is taken into account; and "immaturity" is a guard against the blood seen by a seven-year-old girl, which is not menstruation in sacred Law.

Al-hayda (with kasra on the ha'): the state of avoidance incumbent upon the menstruating woman.

At-tahayyud: sitting and remaining seated; they mean the state of sitting. Al-hayda (with fatha on the ha'): each gush of the gushes of blood. Al-hayd: the flowing; from it comes al-hawd; the Arabs say: "hadat..." (the source breaks off here).

Blood that issues from the womb of a woman who is not in lochia (nifas).

Al-ḥyḍ according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)
