Al-iʿara according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: the verbal noun of 'a'ara'; its noun is 'al-'ariyya'. It derives from 'al-ta'awur', which is exchange and alternation with return; it is also said to come from 'al-'ar' (shame), for returning it engenders blame and shame, as in the saying: 'al-'ariyya' was asked: 'where are you going?' She said: 'I bring my family blame and shame', as al-Jawhari reported.
