Al-janaaʾiz according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

Plural of janaza. With a fath on the jim, it designates the deceased, and with a kasr, the bier upon which the deceased is placed. Al-Jawhari reported that with a fath, it designates the deceased who is upon the bier. If the deceased is not upon it, it is a bed and a bier. It was named janaza because it is an assembly prepared to place the deceased upon it, derived from gathering a thing when it is collected.

Al-janaaʾiz according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

Plural of janaza. Ibn al-Arabi said: Al-Khalil's madhhab is that janaza - with a kasr on the jim - is the wood of the bier of the dead, and with a fath, the deceased, according to the author of Al-Mashariq, whereas Al-Asma'i reversed it. Al-Farra' said: These are two dialects. Ibn Qutayba said: The janaza - with a kasr - is the deceased. Ibn al-A'rabi said: The janaza - with a kasr - is the bier when the deceased is upon it, and a bier without a deceased is not called janaza. Its etymology stems from janaza: when it is heavy. It is stated in Al-Misbah: I covered the thing, I cover it, according to the gate of dharaba: I veiled it, and from this is derived the etymology of janaza. In any case, this suits its being a name for the deceased, because the most important thing done to the deceased is veiling and prayer.

Al-janaaʾiz according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

That which has been legislated for the one at the point of death and the deceased by way of obligation, recommendation, and permissibility.
