Definition Al-ksb

Al-ksb according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

It is the act leading to attracting benefit or averting harm; God's act cannot be described as kasb, He being exalted above gaining benefit or averting harm.

Al-ksb according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

It is the act leading to attracting benefit or averting harm; God's act cannot be described as kasb, He being free of gaining benefit or averting harm. Kasb is also the employing of causes by choice; this is the sense of their saying: 'kasb is the servant's directing of his power'; if asked the difference between kasb and creation (khalq), we answer: the servant's directing of his power and will toward the act, and God's producing the act following that directing, is creation; the same possible object falls under both powers, but under two distinct aspects: the act is possible of God under the aspect of production, and possible of the servant under the aspect of kasb; it does not follow that two independent causes compete over the same individual effect, which is impossible. The theologians gave, for the difference between them, formulas such as: kasb occurs through an instrument and khalq without one; the kasib's possible occurs in what subsists by the kasib, as motion and rest subsist by the mover and the still; thus kasb occurs
