📖 2 min readThey are the letters that are opposed to the voiced (majhūrah) letters. They are letters where the breath is not blocked, meaning the flow of breath is not restrained when they are articulated. This is because they are weak in themselves and the reliance upon them is weak. Due to the weakness of this reliance, they do not have the strength to prevent the breath, so the breath flows along with them. The flow of breath along with the letters is part of what weakens them, and they are the letters other than the aforementioned voiced letters. They were named whispered (mahmūsah), derived from whispering which is concealment, because when the breath flowed with them, their sound production did not attain the strength it has in the voiced letters. Thus, there became a type of concealment in their sound production. The disagreement occurring regarding the whispered letters is the same as that regarding the voiced letters.
