📖 2 min readAn agent noun (ism fa'il) derived from irtidad, which in language means returning in the absolute sense. In the Sharia: it is the return from the true religion to falsehood; may Allah, Glorified and Exalted, preserve us from that. Whoever apostatizes, Allah forbid, Islam is presented to him and his confusion is dispelled; if he is given respite, he is confined for three days: if he repents, he stays (fa biha), and if he does not repent, he is killed.
The meaning of 'fa biha' is: he is taken by the good quality; and the word 'illa' means 'if not' and does not express exception; so it is stated by Sadr al-Shari'a.
(Used) concerning the hypocrite, if Allah the Exalted wills.
As a linguistic term: the one who returns. It is said: irtada fa-huwa murtad (he returned and he is murtad), when he returns. Allah, the Exalted, said: (Quran 2:217: "and do not turn back on your heels").
It is the one who turns back from the religion of Islam, or the one who disbelieves after believing.
