Definition Al-mshkl

Al-mshkl according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

What whose intent cannot be seized except after reflection, following an inquiry.

Al-mshkl according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

What is not reached with ease; the truth resembling falsehood. Among the usulis: what whose intent is known only after reflection, following inquiry, because it enters into its ambiguities and likes; derived from 'ashkala', that is, it entered into its ambiguities and likes, as one says 'ahrama', that is, he entered the haram; and 'ashta', that is, he entered winter; like Allah's saying, exalted be He: 'go to your tillage as you wish', where the meaning of 'anna' became equivocal to the hearer, whether meaning 'how' or 'where'; it was thus known, after inquiry and reflection, to mean 'how', by the indication of the tillage.
