📖 2 min readThe proper locus of the presentation (al-'ard); it is said: it is the thing present in the mind.
Derived from 'al-wad'' (the placing), which in Persian is 'nahadan'. In terminology: designating a thing by a thing such that, upon uttering the first or perceiving it, the second is understood; one says 'a coined term (mawdu')', that is, coined for a meaning. The 'mawdu'' of a science is that wherein its essential attributes are sought. In the logicians' usage, the 'mawdu'' is that upon which the judgment is passed, because it was posited that judgment be passed on it, just as, with them, the 'mahmul' (predicate) is what is judged, because it is predicated of the 'mawdu''.
