Definition Al-ṭaʿa

Al-ṭaʿa according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

It is conformity to the command willingly; it is permitted toward other than God in our view, and with the Mu'tazila: it is conformity to the will.

Al-ṭaʿa according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: yielding and conformity. It governs directly and with a preposition; one says: 'I obeyed him (ata'tu-hu) with ata'a': that is, I yielded to him; one says: 'he obeyed me (ta'a la-hu)'; the noun is ta'a; and 'I am in the hollow of your hand': that is, submissive to you. The participle of the triliteral is ta'i' and tayyi', and of the quadriliteral muti'. Al-Fayyumi said: they said ta'a occurs only upon a command, as reply occurs only upon speech; one says: 'I commanded him and he obeyed', and 'his soul ta'at to him': that is, it consented and became easy. Ibn Faris said: when he went ahead to a command he obeyed him with ata'a; and when he conformed to him he followed him with taawa. Technically: the jurists' definitions of ta'a agree in sense though they differ in wording. Al-Samarqandi said: it is conformity to the command; it is also said: acting for another at his command willingly. Ibn al-Najjar said: 'conformity to the command', that is, doing what is commanded in accord with the command. The Mu'tazila said: it is conformity to the will. It has been defined also: everything carrying pleasure and nearness to God; its opposite is disobedience. Ibn Abidin transmitted the Shaykh al-Islam Zakariyya's definition of ta'a: doing what one is rewarded for, suspended first upon intention, whether one knows who does it for Him or not; he said: and it is a rule of our school that does not reject it.
