Carrying the discourse to a meaning whose indication is not evident from it.

It is the path that does not lead to what is sought; it has been said: proceeding without any path; it has been said: it is the weakness of the discourse.

Al-tʿsf according to Mufradat (Ar-Raghib)

It is committing what is not permissible according to the verifying scholars, though some permit it; it is also applied to committing what involves no necessity and whose principle is nonexistence. It has been said: it is carrying the discourse to a meaning whose indication is not evident from it, and it is lighter than nullity (butlan).
