Definition Al-tawyl

Al-tawyl according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

Linguistically: turning back. In the Law: diverting the verse from its apparent meaning to a meaning it can bear, when the bearing meaning he adopts accords with the Book and the Sunna, as His saying: "He brings forth the living from the dead": if he means the bird's coming out of the egg, it is exegesis (tafsir); if he means the believer's coming out of the disbeliever, or the knower's out of the ignorant, it is interpretation (ta'wil). Its detail will come under the entry (tafsir), Allah the Exalted willing, and the difference between it and bayan was given under the entry (bayan), by the favor of Allah, the giving King.

Al-tawyl according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

Linguistically: masdar of awwala; the verb's root: "the thing turned (ala) and turns (ya'ulu)": when it returns; one says: "the matter turned to so-and-so", that is, it returned to him; its meaning: explaining what the thing turns to and ends at. Originally it is turning back (tarji'); one says: "I reflected on the verse (ta'awwaltu)" when one examines it while returning to its meaning.

Al-tawyl according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

Diverting speech to a bearing meaning, in accord with what precedes and follows it, not contravening the Book and the Sunna, by the path of inference.

Al-tawyl according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

Returning the thing to the end intended by it, whether word or deed; mentioned by al-Raghib (al-Mufradat, p. 31).
