The annexing of mutually differing restrictions such that a part results from each of them.
The annexing of two things, or of several things, to one common thing. In another formulation: the annexing of a particular to a universal. Its reality is the annexing to a universal concept of differing restrictions that group it, whether correlative or not. Real division is annexing to the divided thing restrictions that are mutually exclusive in separation and concomitance; conventional division is annexing to the divided thing differing restrictions, as when one says: this man is a writer or a laugher. The difference from tardid (reciprocity) is that the term of commonality is necessary in division, not in reciprocity; hence they said division consists in producing plurality in the divided thing, or duality in the divided thing.
Multiple enumeration, then the attribution of each to its proper end according to determination.
The enumeration of attributes in the principle, and the nullification of those unable to prevail in it, so that the remainder is determined by it; it is also said to be an expression wavering between two things, one of which is excluded.
It is the annexing of mutually differing restrictions such that a part results from each of them; it also means division proper: determining the common share and separating the shares from one another by a measure or otherwise.
