📖 2 min readIt is unity in the concept; it has been said: the succession of separate words denoting one thing under one aspect.
It is applied to two senses: the first is unity in propositional content (sidq), the second unity in the concept; whoever considers the first distinguishes between them, and whoever considers the second does not distinguish between them.
Unity in the concept, not unity in essence, as insan and bashar (man and humankind); the sound rule about synonyms is the validity of either occupying the place of the other: this is Ibn al-Hajib's choice in his usul, namely that this is required absolutely; al-Baydawi's choice: that they belong to one language; the Imam's choice: that it is not required.
In language: the riding of one of two persons behind the other. Technically: the multiplicity of the word with the unity of the meaning assigned to it, as if the two words were one mounted behind the other on a single mount, which is the meaning.
The succession of separate words denoting one thing under one aspect.
Unity in the concept, or the succession of words denoting one named thing.
