Definition Al-tsamḥ

Al-tsamḥ according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

That the purpose of the statement not be known, and that understanding it require supplying another term.

Al-tsamḥ according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

Using the term outside its proper sense without intending a meaningful link and without erecting a sign indicating it, relying upon the clearness of the meaning in the context; the existence of the link then prevents tasamuh. Thus no one would say: 'I saw a lion spitting in the mosque', that is tasamuh.

Al-tsamḥ according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

In language (in Persian: 'javanmardi namudan va asan kraftan'). It is used for what in the expression is a tolerated device, the indicator clearly manifesting the device; from it 'al-musamaha'. Al-Fadil al-Jalbi said in his margins on 'al-Tawih': tasamuh means using the term outside its reality, without intending an accepted link, nor erecting an indicator of it, relying upon the clearness of understanding the meaning in that context.

Al-tsamḥ according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

In language: largeness, as in giving; and by custom: that the purpose of the statement not be known and that understanding it require supplying (another term) (al-Ta'rifat p. 59).
