Al-tṭwʿ according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

A name for what has been legislated in addition to the obligatory duties (fara'id) and obligations (wajibat).

Al-tṭwʿ according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: a tafa''ala form of ta'a yatu'a: when he submits; tatawwu' is voluntary free giving (tabarru'); one says 'tatawwa'a bi-l-shay'': he did it of his own accord. Al-Raghib said: tatawwu' in origin is undertaking obedience; and in 'At-Ta'aruf': free undertaking of what is not required, such as the nafl (supererogatory act). God Most High said: 'fa-man tatawwa'a khayran fa-huwa khayrun lahu' (whoever volunteers a good deed, it is a good for him).

Al-tṭwʿ according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

'Tatawwa'a bi-l-shay'': to volunteer it. In the Law: specifically devoted to non-obligatory obedience (al-Wa'wi). Among the Hanafis: what was legislated in addition to the obligatory duties and obligations. Among the Shafi'is: what a man institutes by himself. Among the Zahirites: that which, if a man leaves it deliberately, he is not thereby disobedient to God by it. Part of tatawwu' falls under obedience and part of obedience falls under tatawwu'. Al-ta'a (obedience): submission and compliance; it has been said: there is no obedience except upon a command. In the August Book: 'wa-aqsamu bi-Llahi jahda aymanihim la-in amartahum la-yakhrujunna, qul la tuqsimu ta'atan ma'rufa, inna Allaha khabirun bi-ma ta'malun' (They swore by God their most solemn oath that if you ordered them they would go forth; say: swear not, reasoned obedience; God is aware of what you do) (An-Nur, 53), that is: God has known that your obedience is only words without deed, and every time you swear you lie. It has been said: let your command be reasoned obedience without swearing, and do not swear. Among the Hanafis: performing what is rewarded, suspended first upon intention, knowing first for whom one performs it. Among the Shafi'is: coming with what is commanded and desisting from what is forbidden. Among the Zahirites: it is faith.
