The thing: he laid down its way (shara'ahu). Sharra'a: intensive of shara'a. The shari'a: he enacted it. Al-shar': the road; what Allah the Exalted enacted. Their saying: "the people in this have one shar'", that is, alike, whether one or two, singular or plural, masculine or feminine. In the jurists' saying "by the shar'": it is what is drawn from the Lawgiver's speech, taken from the Quran or the Sunna; it may be used by extension for what occurs in the jurists' speech though not drawn from the Lawgiver (al-Bajirmi).
