📖 2 min readTo deem it good (istahsana): to consider it fine. Al-ihsan: bestowing favour, beneficence towards others. In the Noble Quran: 'Allah commands justice and beneficence' (An-Nahl, 90). Ihsan is above justice ('adl), because justice means giving what one owes and taking what is one's due, while ihsan means giving more than what one owes and taking less than one's due; ihsan is therefore an excess. To seek justice is a duty, to seek ihsan is a recommendation and a supererogatory act. That is why Allah magnified the reward of the people of ihsan, saying: 'Allah loves the doers of good' (Al-Ma'idah, 13). In the Shari'ah: to worship Allah as if you saw Him; and if you do not see Him, He sees you (al-Jurjani). Al-ahsan: the most beautiful and the best. In the noble hadith: 'The closest of you to me on the Day of Resurrection are those of you with the best character.'
