Definition Az-zakat

Az-zakat according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

In language: increase. In the Law: it denotes the obligation of a portion of wealth upon a specific wealth, for a specific owner.

Az-zakat according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

In language: purification, growth and increase. In the Law: giving a portion of the annual threshold to the poor; it is said it is the name of the amount given to the poor; and zakat is also called sadaqa, for what it indicates of truthfulness in servanthood, as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "sadaqa is a proof". And in Kanz ad-Daqa'iq: it is due on two hundred dirhams and twenty dinars, a quarter of a tenth, with knowledge of the amounts of dirhams and dinars in their place.
