Definition Diya

Diya according to Al-Kulliyat (Al-Kafawi)

Verbal noun of wada when the killer handed the slain’s guardian the wealth that is the life’s price; then that wealth was named diya, by the verbal noun; hence her plural, like ’idda with omission of the waw; so in al-Maghrib. Said: the final ta replaces the initial waw.

Diya according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

The wealth that is the life’s price.

Diya according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

The price of the free man’s life, or of a part of him.

Diya according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

The wealth that is the life’s price, thus expressed some, that is al-Jourjani.

Diya according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

The wealth that is the life’s price.
