In the noble hadith: 'Sin is what troubles your breast, even though the people have given you rulings and excused you', that is, even though they granted you therein a dispensation and permission. Ist afta such a one: to ask his opinion on a matter. In the Quran: [an-Nisa, 127: 'They ask you for a ruling concerning women; say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning them.']. Al-ifta': verbal noun. Among the Hanafis: the exposition of the ruling of the matter. Al-fatwa: the answer to what is obscure among the legal or statutory questions. (plural) fatawa and fatawi. Among the Malikis: the communication of the legal judgement in a non-binding manner. Al-futya: the fatwa. Al-mufti: he who exercises the giving of legal opinion among the people. Among the usulists: the mujtahid. (Ibn Abidin). To ransom the captive, in the forms fadan, fidan and fida': to deliver him by wealth or other, freeing him from what he was in.
